A beer-naming competition has proved a huge hit for brewer McMullen after 3,000 drinkers entered.
The Hertfordshire company wanted punters to come up with names for it seasonal brew for August, a 4.4% golden ale.
And they were not disappointed when thousands had a go at naming the ale in pubs across the estate.
The winning entry was ‘Augustus Macsimus’, reflecting the month and Hertford’s Roman past.
The winner was Steve Wyatt who picked up £500, a 20 litre box set of beer and a brewery tour, on top of the honour of having the beer branded with his choice of name and made available across McMullen’s 134 pubs.
Production and sales director Fergus McMullen said: “Seasonal ales are very important to us – their sales have doubled in the past year. We thought a competition would create further interest and highlight our range of seasonals, and we were delighted by the number of entries we received as well as their quality.”
