Visitors to the London Olympics will be paying 50 per cent more for an average bottle of wine than they would if the Games were in Paris or Madrid.
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) highlighted the taxation disparity in a submission to the government ahead of the Budget urging for ministers to give the industry a break.
The duty escalator could see another 7.2 per cent of duty whacked on in March.
WSTA Interim chief executive Gavin Partington said: "By scrapping the planned duty increase, the Chancellor would also be providing some much needed relief to consumers whose household budgets are already being squeezed.
With thousands of extra visitors heading to the UK for the Olympic Games, this is no time to force drinks prices up even further."
