Pubs in Henley-on-Thames will be staging a ‘Tax-Free Beer Day’ later this month to show the public how much of their cash goes to the government.
Ten Brakspear pubs in the area will be selling Brakspear Bitter, Kronenbourg and Fosters at £1.30 off their usual asking price of up to £3.30.
The February 28 event is part of an industry move to encourage George Osborne to lend a sympathetic ear ahead of this year’s Budget. Brakspear is also encouraging customers to sign a petition that asks for zero beer duty increases and a cut on VAT in pubs to five per cent.
Mark Dunlop, licensee at The Angel on the Bridge, said: “This is a great way of highlighting the tax burden that pubs have to bear. We’d love to sell Brakspear at this price every day – it would make us much more competitive with the supermarkets and we’d sell more beer.”
Brakspear chief executive Tom Davies (pictured) added: “We hope our Tax-Free Day encourages more people to enjoy a pint or two in their Brakspear local and inspires them to sign our petition to help protect these pubs.”
According to CAMRA the £1.30 figure is made up of excise duty (48p), VAT (52p), employment tax (18p) and business rates (12p)
